How to say “father” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
هو الحسن بن أبي الحسن البصري
He is Al-Hasan, son of Abu al-Hasan al-Basri.
أَبِي — Abu. This is the front of the father's courtesy-name ('father of...'), held in the governed form by the preceding 'son of', and it heads its own 'of' pairing with the name after it. So the lineage stacks one possessive inside another.
From: Raised in the Prophet’s Household →قَالَ إِجْلِسْنِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِ بَكْرٍ
He said, "Seat me beside him," so they seated him beside Abu Bakr.
أَبِ — father of. The 'father of' word opening the kunya, front term of a pairing with the following name; it owns the 'side' relationship through the chain and takes the genitive from the preceding noun.
From: Prayer During Illness →تَقُولُ إِنَّ نِسَاءَكَ يَنْشُدْنَكَ اللَّهَ الْعَدْلَ فِي بِنْتِ أَبِ بَكْرِ،
She says that your wives implore you, by God, for justice for the daughter of Abu Bakr.
أَبِ — Abu. The 'father-of' element of a by-name, here in its genitive shape because it stands as the owner in the chain; it heads the nickname and links to the part after it. As possessor of 'daughter' and owner of 'Bakr', it sits mid-chain.
From: Wives of the Prophet →ثُمَّ قَالَ أَفِي الْقَوْمِ إِبْنُ أَبِ قُحَافَةِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ،
Then he said, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa among the people?" three times.
أَبِي — of Abu. A 'father of...' word forming the next link of the name, owned by the name to follow; it takes the genitive of an owner-slot inside the 'son of...' chain. It pairs directly with the next word with no separate 'of'.
