حَيَاتِهِ — his life. A noun with -hi ('his') attached, 'his life', made definite by the suffix so no separate 'the' is needed. As the object of the preposition before it, its ending sits in the governed (genitive) shape. The -hi reaches back to the boy whose lifetime is meant.
