How to say “listen” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فَقَالَتْ خَدِيجَةُ يَا ابْنَ عَمِّ اِسْمَعْ مِنْ ابْنِ أَخِيكَ
Khadijah said, "O cousin, listen to what your nephew has to say."
اِسْمَعْ — listen. A bare command form, stripped down to its leanest shape, which is how Arabic builds the imperative. It is aimed at the man just called on, telling him to listen; the verb itself carries the 'you' so no separate pronoun appears. The thing listened to is then introduced by the following 'from'.
From: The Night of Revelation and Consolation →يَا وَلِيدٍ رَافِعِ اِسْمَعْ أَقَلِّ لَكَ أَرَاكَ وَاللَّهِ مَثَلِي مَزْجِي الْبِضَاعَةِ ،
O young man Rafi, listen. I tell you, by God, I see you mixing the merchandise like I do.
اِسْمَعْ — listen. A command form, directing the listener to listen. Arabic builds the singular command by stripping the present-tense verb down to its bare stem, so this is the imperative aimed straight at the person just addressed by name.
