ثُمَّ رَأَى اِبْنُ الْجَوْزِيِ أَنَّ التَّصْنِيفُ فِي فَنِّ الْوَعْظِ يُكْمِلُ مَجَالِسَهُ؛
Then Ibn al-Jawzi held that writing in the art of preaching complements his sermons.
الْوَعْظِ — of preaching. The owning half of the 'art of preaching' pairing — it is what the art belongs to. As the second noun in that side-by-side possessive, it sits in the after-a-possessor ('of') case, and it is what makes the whole 'the art of...' phrase count as definite.

Then indeed he came, after he had finished his sermon, with gentle admonitions.
الْوَعْظِ — the admonition. A noun made definite by al- 'the'. It sits in the genitive because the preposition before it requires that ending, and together they name the broad category that the admonitions were drawn from.
