ظِلٌّ — a shade. An indefinite noun, a patch of shade, whose trailing '-un' marks it indefinite and as the thing possessed in the 'it had shade' construction. It is the subject that the earlier 'for it' is asserting about. The indefinite tail does the job of English 'a'.
