How to say “shelter” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول انطلق ثلاثة نفر ممن كان قبلكم حتى آواهم المبيت إلى غار فدخلوه،
I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: 'Three men from those before you set out, and night forced them to take shelter in a cave. They entered it.'
آوَاهُمُ — forced them to take shelter. This is a past-tense verb carrying the object pronoun -hum ('them') attached to its end, so subject, action and object sit in one word. The grammatical subject is 'the night' named just after, and the men are the ones it forced; Arabic lets the object cling to the verb this way.
