خذ — take. A command-verb, 'take', the bare order shape addressed to 'you'. It opens the herbalist's quoted instruction.

Joha took the medicine and went to the donkey and put it in its eye,
فأخذ — so he took. The connector 'so' fused to a past-tense verb, 'took', whose subject is named right after. It carries the story to Joha's action.
