How to say “and the cold” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَصْبِرُ عَلَى مُكَابَدَةِ قِيَامِ اللَّيْلِ فِي الْحَرِّ وَالْبَرْدِ
Many people endure the hardship of standing in prayer at night in heat and cold.
وَالْبَرْدِ — and the cold. Here wa- joins two matched opposites, 'heat' and 'cold', as a tight pair under the same preposition. This is the wa- of pairing rather than a loose list, binding the two conditions into one 'heat-and-cold' span. The noun stays definite and in the genitive like its partner.
