ثُمَّ اِحْتَمَلَ قِرْبَتَهُ وَزَادَهُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ،
Then he carried his waterskin and his provisions to the mosque,
اِحْتَمَلَ — he carried. A bare past verb meaning he carried, its 'he' subject understood from the narrative and built into the verb. No separate pronoun is needed.

And he bore it, with its weight and his dependents, then he turned away from them.
وَاحْتَمَلَ — and he bore. A coordinating wa- ('and') on a past-tense verb of bearing/carrying, 'he' inside it. The wa- chains this onto the running account of the elder's departure.
