وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ النَّبِيَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ
And the people remained in the mosque, waiting for the Prophet, peace be upon him.
الْمَسْجِدِ — the mosque. A definite noun (the mosque) in the genitive as the object of the 'in' before it, the case that preposition forces. Its 'the' marks the specific known place, the gathering-spot, not a mosque in general.

Then he carried his waterskin and his provisions to the mosque,
