How to say “close” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فقال قيسوا ما بين الأرضين فإلى أيتهما كان أدنى فهو له،
He said, 'Measure the distance between the two lands, and whichever he is closer to is his.'
أَدْنَى — closer. This is an elative — 'nearer / closer' — the accusative predicate of 'to be'. Its final long 'a' is fixed and never shifts for case, so position tells its role. It measures which land he ends up closest to.
From: Righteous Company →فقاسوا فوجدوه أدنى إلى الأرض التي أراد،
They measured and found he was closer to the land he intended.
أَدْنَى — was closer. This is an elative — 'nearer / closer' — functioning as the second element of 'found him [to be] closer'. Its fixed final long 'a' never shifts for case, so position tells its role. It reports the verdict: he was nearer the good land.
