  هِمَّتُهُ — his ambition. This noun, 'his ambition', carries the attached -hu 'his' at its end, fusing the thing and its owner. It is the feminine subject of the verb before it, which is why that verb took a feminine ending; the -hu ties the ambition back to the narrator.
