Similarly, truthfulness, trustworthiness, righteousness, and benevolence, though they cost effort, elevate one's status and increase his good deeds.
تُكَلِّفُ — they cost. A present-tense verb completing the linking-verb frame, 'cost / burden', carrying its own 'they' subject. The pairing 'were + cost' gives the sense 'they keep costing', and this verb takes two objects, the person and the cost.
