And in prayer you say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great' and 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High'; you declare His transcendence above all deficiency,
الْأَعْلَى — the Most High. 'the Most High', adjective on 'my Lord'; its long final vowel holds the same shape in every case, so agreement shows by position.
From: Turning Daily Words into Worship →قد علمت أَيْن الْمنزل فاحد لَهَا تسر أَعلَى الهمم
You know where the abode is, so set a course for it; the highest aspirations race towards it.
أَعْلَى — the highest. A superlative / elative 'highest', first term of an 'of' pairing — 'the highest of aspirations' — the subject of 'race', nominative. It owns the noun that follows.
From: Night Prayer and Nearness to God →ثمَّ الرِّضَا بهَا وَهُوَ أَعلَى مِنْهُ
Then acceptance of them, which is higher than that.
أَعْلَى — higher. An elative, 'higher', the predicate of that clause. The pattern lifts 'high' to 'higher'; its fixed final 'aa' shows no case vowel, so position marks its role.
From: Accepting God's Decree →ثمَّ الشُّكْر عَلَيْهَا وَهُوَ أَعلَى من الرِّضَا
Then gratitude for them, which is higher than acceptance.
أَعْلَى — higher. The elative 'higher' again as predicate, its fixed final 'aa' unchanged for case. Gratitude is set above the stage just before it.
