Arabic vocabulary
How to say “I wish” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
هَيْهَاتَ، رَحَلَ كُلٌّ بِمَا فِيهِ، فَلَيْتَ اَلذُّنُوبَ إِذَا تَخَلَّتْ خَلَتْ
Alas! Everything has departed with what is in it; I wish that the sins, when they depart, would vanish.
فَلَيْتَ — I wish. The connector fa- ('so') fused to a wishing particle that means 'if only/would that'. The particle expresses an unreal longing and forces the noun after it into the accusative as the thing wished about; the fa- chains this wish onto the lament.
