وَتَأَوَّلَ — and interprets. A Form V verb ('interpreted allegorically'), past, subject 'he' inside. The Form V pattern carries a reflexive 'work it out for oneself' shade. It marks the third strand of his stance: re-reading some texts non-literally.

وَتَأَوَّلَ — and interprets. The conjunction adds a past verb on the reflexive pattern, he interpreted, doer understood. The reflexive shape carries the sense of working out a non-literal reading for oneself, the nuance built into the verb's form.
