  So the man said: I will go to him and tell him that I have bought a palace in Paradise for twenty thousand, perhaps he will give me the same.

  فَلَعَلَّهُ — perhaps he. This is fa- 'so/perhaps then' plus the hoping particle 'maybe' plus the attached -hu 'he'. The particle expresses expectation and, like the 'inna' family, takes its subject (here the attached 'he') into the accusative.

• وَإِنْ رَأَى شَرًّا مِنْهُ قَالَ لَعَلَّ هَذَا يَنْجُوَ

  And if he saw something bad from him, he would say, "Perhaps this will save him."

  لَعَلَّ — perhaps. A particle expressing hope or expectation, 'perhaps, it may be that', which colours the whole following statement as a wish rather than a fact. It governs the noun after it. Its job is modal: softening 'this saves' into 'perhaps this will save', the generous reading he gives others.

  Then he said to him, "Tell me; perhaps I have some relief for you."

  فَلَعَلَّ — then perhaps. The connector 'fa-' (then) fused with the particle 'laall' (perhaps/maybe). The 'fa-' moves the thought forward while 'laall' opens a clause of hope or possibility about what may follow. So the word both links and flags that a hopeful 'perhaps' is coming.
