  He took the trouble to name, verse by verse and in order, what the reciters had read because he was unable to do so.

  القراء — the reciters. A definite plural noun 'the reciters', the subject of the preceding 'read', so it takes the subject-style ending. The al- makes the group definite. Standing after its verb, it supplies the doers of the reading inside the relative clause.
