Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the following” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَمَنَعَهُمْ مِنَ الاِسْتِصْبَاحِ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الْقَابِلَةِ، فَعَمَدَ الْفَضْلُ إِلَى الْقُمْقُمِْ مَمْلُوءٍ،
So he prevented them from having a light on the following night, and so al-Fadl reached toward the flask full of water.
الْقَابِلَةِ — the following. This is a describing adjective tied to 'the night', and it copies that noun's al- definiteness and genitive ending, plus a feminine shape to agree. Arabic makes an adjective match its noun across case, gender, definiteness and number. That four-way matching is how you know it modifies 'the night'.
