How to say “use of a lamp / keeping a lamp lit” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَمَنَعَهُمْ مِنَ الاِسْتِصْبَاحِ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الْقَابِلَةِ، فَعَمَدَ الْفَضْلُ إِلَى الْقُمْقُمِْ مَمْلُوءٍ،
So he prevented them from having a light on the following night, and so al-Fadl reached toward the flask full of water.
الاِسْتِصْبَاحِ — having a light. This is a verbal noun on a 'seeking / making use of' pattern, meaning the act of getting light from a lamp, and it carries al- 'the'. After the 'from' it sits in the genitive. The pattern itself adds the 'seeking-to' nuance to the basic lamp root.
