How to say “the night” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَمَنَعَهُمْ مِنَ الاِسْتِصْبَاحِ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الْقَابِلَةِ، فَعَمَدَ الْفَضْلُ إِلَى الْقُمْقُمِْ مَمْلُوءٍ،
So he prevented them from having a light on the following night, and so al-Fadl reached toward the flask full of water.
اللَّيْلَةِ — the night. This noun carries al- 'the', marking a specific night, and sits in the genitive because the preposition before it governs it. The case ending is forced by 'on', not by any role as subject or object. Its definiteness flags it as a particular night in the story.
