Arabic vocabulary
How to say “turning away” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وإن أعرضت كإعراضك عن وصية الإله العظيم ،
And if you turn away as you turned away from the command of the Almighty God,
كَإِعْرَاضِكَ — like your turning away. Here the prefix ka- 'like' opens the word and forces the action-noun into the possessed ending, while the attached -ka 'your' closes it: 'like your turning away'. The ka- sets up a comparison and -ka names whose turning away is meant; one word carries the simile, the act, and its owner.
From: True Devotion →وإن شردت وركبت الإعراض والكسل مثلي ، فواحسرتا علي وعليك
And if you stray and embrace neglect and laziness like me, then alas for both you and me,
الإِعْرَاضَ — the turning away. The al- marks this definite, 'the turning away, the neglect', and it is the direct object of 'you took up', in the object ending. The ending flags it as the thing embraced, not the doer.
From: True Devotion →فَأَوَّلُ عُقُوبَاتِهِمْ إِعْرَاضُهُمْ عَنْ الْحَقِّ شُغْلًا بِالْخَلْقِ،
The first of their punishments is that they turn away from the truth, becoming preoccupied with people.
إِعْرَاضُهُمْ — their turning away. A verbal noun naming the act of 'turning away', with -hum ('their') attached as the doer of that act. It serves as the predicate explaining what their first punishment actually consists of, and the suffix turns an action into an owned, named thing the rest of the sentence describes.
