How to say “voluntary” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
ومن تيمم لنفلٍ لا يَستبيح به الفرضَ على المشهور،
One who performs Tayammum for a supererogatory prayer cannot perform an obligatory prayer with it according to the prevalent opinion.
لِنَفْلٍ — for a supererogatory prayer. The 'li-' marks the intention — 'for a voluntary prayer,' indefinite, in the -i form. He made the tayammum aiming only at an optional prayer; that limited intention shapes the ruling.
From: When Earth Replaces Water →ويستبيح ما نواه من النفل
They can perform what they intended of the supererogatory.
النَّفْلِ — supererogatory. 'the voluntary [prayer],' in the -i form after 'of' — the optional devotion he intended. He may perform that and only that on the tayammum he made for it.
From: When Earth Replaces Water →فإن تقدّم بَطَلَ عن الفرضِ وعن النفلِ المؤقّت
If done earlier, it is invalid for both the obligatory prayer and the time-bound voluntary prayer.
النَّفْلِ — the optional. 'the optional [prayer],' in the -i form after 'for.' The premature tayammum is void for this too — but only the time-bound kind, as the adjective next specifies.
