How to say “wife” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وكانت أمه مولاة لأم سلمة؛ زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم،
His mother was a freedwoman of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
زَوْجِ — the wife of. This noun renames Umm Salama, identifying her as the wife, so it copies the governed ending to show they point to the same person. It also fronts an 'of' pairing, 'wife of the Prophet'.
From: Raised in the Prophet’s Household →عَنْ عَائِشَةِ ـ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ـ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
From Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace.
زَوْجِ — wife of. The first noun of an 'of' possessive pair: 'wife', which by standing first gives up any 'the' and takes its definiteness from the owner that follows. Arabic builds 'wife of X' by simply setting the two nouns side by side, no separate 'of'.
