When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was on a mat that had an indentation on its side,
حَصِيرٍ — a mat. An indefinite noun 'a mat' in the 'of' ending after 'on'; its indefinite tanwin marks it as 'a' woven mat, which the following clause then describes.
