Arabic vocabulary
How to say “generous” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ولكنك فعلت ليقال جواد، فقد قيل، ثم أُمر به فسُحب على وجهه ثم ألقي في النار
But you did it so that he would be called generous; so it was said. Then an order was issued about him; he was dragged on his face and then thrown into the fire.
جَوَّادٌ — generous. An indefinite noun (no al- 'the') working as the content of what was hoped to be said - the label 'generous' people would pin on him. It functions as the predicate of the hidden 'he is', i.e. '[that he] is generous'. Being indefinite fits its role as a describing word applied to him rather than a specific named thing.
