How to say “hidden” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَإِنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَوْقَ ظَاهِرِهِمْ
And indeed, the inner state of the people is worse than their outward appearance.
بَاطِنَ — the inner state. This noun is the topic the emphasis particle inna just fronted, so it wears the accusative ending inna forces on it. It also heads an ownership pairing with the next word, 'the inner part of the people', opening an 'X of Y' chain after the emphasis.
From: Permissible Laughter and Conduct →أي تختبر وقال مقاتل تظهر وتبدو وبلوت الشيء إذا اختبرته ليظهر لك باطنه وما خفى منه
Meaning, they will be tested, and Muqatil said: they will appear and be revealed. You say you have tested something to uncover its hidden parts and what was concealed.
بَاطِنُهُ — its hidden parts. A noun with an attached '-its' on its end, and that suffix reaches back to the 'something' tested earlier rather than to any nearer word. So the pairing is a possessive bond: the inner part belongs to that tested thing. Tracking which earlier noun a suffix owns is part of reading these chains.
