How to say “Muqatil” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وعن مقاتل
And from Muqatil:
مُقَاتِلٍ — Muqatil. Proper name (Muqatil); the '-in' ending — it follows 'an' (from), so it takes the 'of' (genitive) ending.
From: Angels at al-Aqsa →قال مقاتل بما تبصرون من الخلق ومالا تبصرون منه
Maqatil said: by what you see of creation and what you do not see of it.
مُقَاتِلٌ — Maqatil. A scholar's proper name, standing as the subject of 'said' and marked by the subject ending. The ending identifies him as the one speaking; the name is treated as a fixed noun.
From: Proof in All Creation →أي تختبر وقال مقاتل تظهر وتبدو وبلوت الشيء إذا اختبرته ليظهر لك باطنه وما خفى منه
Meaning, they will be tested, and Muqatil said: they will appear and be revealed. You say you have tested something to uncover its hidden parts and what was concealed.
مُقَاتِلُ — Muqatil. This is a proper name standing as the subject of the preceding 'said', so it tells you whose opinion is being reported. As a person's name it is already definite without needing 'the', and Arabic places the doer right after the verb rather than before it, the normal subject-after-verb order.
