وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسُ وَالْجُمُعَةُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ وَرَمَضَانُ إِلَى رَمَضَانَ مَكَفِّرَاتٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُنَّ إِذَا اجْتُنِبَتِ الْكَبَائِرِ
The Messenger of Allah said: The five prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for what is between them, if the major sins are avoided.
الْكَبَائِرُ — the major sins. A noun with 'the', 'the major sins', standing as the thing acted upon by the passive verb. Being the subject of a passive, it takes the subject form even though it is what is avoided.

And by Allah, Ibn Abbas was correct. As for the Hadith, it does not limit the major sins.
الْكَبَائِرِ — the major sins. The owner-noun completing 'limiting of the major sins', set straight after with no word for 'of', in the (genitive) possessor form. It names what would be limited.
