How to say “mother of” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
So I went to Umm Salama and said to her.
أُمَّ — mother of. A 'mother of' title that heads a name-pair (a kunya), owning the name after it; here it is the person gone to, in the object slot, and forms a possessive link with 'Salama'.
From: Umar and the Prophet's Wives →
So Abu Talha said, "O Umm Sulaym, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, has come with the people."
Umm. 'Mother of' as the called-on term after 'O', front of the 'X of Y' teknonym leaning on the name to come. As a vocative it takes a special short ending and still owns 'Sulaym' next.
From: The Barley Loaf That Fed Eighty →
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, "Come here, Umm Sulaym; what do you have?"
أُمَّ — mother. 'Mother of' as the called-on term after 'O', front of the 'X of Y' teknonym leaning on 'Sulaym'. As a vocative it takes a special short ending and still owns the name to come.
From: The Barley Loaf That Fed Eighty →
Masruq said, 'I asked Umm Ruman.'
أُمَّ — Umm. This is the first half of the name 'mother-of ___', and it is the object of 'asked', so it takes the accusative ending. It leans onto the name after it for its meaning, the two binding directly with no separate 'of'.
