How to say “overwhelm” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
اختار آدم فغلبت القلوب بالحسد،
He chose Adam, and hearts were overwhelmed with envy.
غَلَبَتِ — were overwhelmed. A past-tense verb with a built-in feminine-singular 'it/she' subject, its feminine ending agreeing with the non-human plural that follows, which Arabic treats as feminine singular for agreement. It reports the completed overwhelming, with the real subject named after the verb.
From: Adam and the Rebel →وَهَؤُلاءِ هُمْ الَّذِينَ غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ شَقْوَتُهُمْ
And these are the people whose misery overcame them.
غَلَبَتْ — overcame. A past-tense verb in the feminine singular, and it sits before its subject as Arabic often arranges it. Its feminine ending agrees with the feminine 'misery' that follows, so the verb is shaped by a subject that has not yet appeared.
