وَوَصَفَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النُّسَّاكِ عِنْدَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ عَائِشَةِ فَقَالُوا هُوَ جِدٌّ كُلُّهُ،
They described a man among the ascetics to Ubayd Allah ibn Aisha, and they said, "He is all seriousness."
النُّسَّاكِ — the ascetics. The al- makes this definite, 'the' ascetics, the known group. Sitting after the preposition, it takes the genitive ending that prepositions impose, marking it as the set the man is selected from.
