How to say “thinking” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
اعْلَمْ أَنَّ مُطْلَقَ الْهَوَى يَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّذَّةِ الْحَاضِرَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ فِكْرٍ فِي عَاقِبَةٍ
Know that unchecked desire calls towards immediate pleasure without considering the consequences.
فِكْرٍ — considering. The owner completing 'without any thought of...'. Being indefinite (no 'the') and genitive, it reads as 'any thought at all' — which is how Arabic delivers 'without a shred of thought'.
From: The Discipline of Foresight →لأَنَّ الْبَهَائِمَ وَاقِفَةٌ مَعَ طِبَاعِهَا لَا نَظَرَ لَهَا إِلَى عَاقِبَةٍ وَلا فِكْرَ فِي مَآلٍ
Because animals remain with their nature, without regard to consequences and without thinking of their fate.
فِكْرَ — thinking. Like the earlier 'regard', negated and accusative — 'no thought whatsoever'. The same absolute-denial frame repeats.
From: The Discipline of Foresight →العاقل يرى بنور فكره عواقب الأمور قبل وقوعها، فيتجنب ما يخاف سوء عاقبته، ويسارع إلى ما يرجو حسن عاقبته
"The wise person sees, with the light of his thought, the consequences of matters before they occur. He avoids what he fears will have a bad outcome, and hastens toward what he hopes will have a good outcome."
فِكْرِهِ — his thoughts. The completing half of 'light of his thought', so it takes the possessive case, and the -hu on its end means 'his'. The whole stacks two possessive links: the light belongs to the thought, and the thought belongs to him.
From: Think Before You Act →فاجعل لنفسك من الفكر مرآة ترى بها ما وراء الحوادث،
So make for yourself a mirror of thought through which you see what lies beyond events,
الْفِكْرِ — the thought. The object of 'out of', so it stands in the possessive case, with 'the' marking the known faculty of thought. It names the stuff from which the inner mirror is to be fashioned.
From: Think Before You Act →أي فلينظر نظر الفكر والاستدلال ليعلم أن الذي ابتدأ أول خلقه من نطفة قادر على إعادته
Meaning, let him look with thought and reasoning to know that He who began his creation from a sperm-drop is able to resurrect him.
الفِكْرِ — thought. The owner of the 'of' pair with 'looking', so 'the look of thought'; the noun carries the possessor ending and lends definiteness to the action-noun before it. Juxtaposition makes the link.
