• وَمَا خَصَّ بِهِ زَمَانِهِمْ مِنْ خَيْرِيَّةٍ عَلَى الْقُرُونِ،

  and the special excellence with which their time was singled out over the generations,

  زَمَانِهِمْ — their time. A noun ('time/era') with the attached possessor '-hum' = 'their', so 'their era'. It is the thing set apart by the verb; the suffix folds the owners directly onto the noun instead of a separate possessive word.

• أَنْزَلُوا النُّصُوصَ مَنْزِلَةَ الْخَلِيفَةِ فِي هَذَا الزَّمَانِ،

  They lowered the texts to the status of the caliph in this age.

  الزَّمَانِ — the age. A noun meaning 'age/era', definite and in the genitive because the earlier 'in' governs the phrase it closes. It is the noun the demonstrative 'this' is pointing at, so together they fix the action in the present time.

  الزَّمَانِ — of the age. A definite noun 'the age', the owning second term of 'a marvel of the age', hence the genitive. It completes the praise-construct, the of-pairing carrying the meaning with no separate word. It frames him as the wonder of his whole era.
