So when a punishment befalls to test a sin,
ذنبًا — a sin. An indefinite noun serving as the thing tested, so it takes the object-style ending shown by the doubled vowel on its end. It is the target of the purpose-verb 'to test'. Left indefinite, it means 'a sin' in general, the fault the punishment is meant to refine away.
From: Preparing for Death and Repentance →فيقول عيسى إن ربي غضب اليوم غضباً لم يغضب قبله مثله، ولن يغضب بعده مثله ولم يذكر ذنباً،
Then Jesus will say, "My Lord was angry today with an anger like none before it, and none like it will be after it, and he did not mention any sin."
ذَنْبًا — any sin. An indefinite noun in the object form, the thing not mentioned; the lack of 'the' under negation gives 'any sin at all', and the ending marks it as the verb's object. Indefinite-under-negation widens it to 'any'.
