How to say “group” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فإذا وجدوا قومًا يذكرون الله عز وجل،
When they find a group remembering Allah, the Glorious and Majestic,
قَوْمًا — a group. This is the object of 'found', in the accusative and indefinite — 'a group / company'. The accusative marks it as what they find; a relative clause describing it follows.
From: Where Angels Gather →وإن سألت عن الهالكين فقوم رضوا بالمياه الكدر،
And if you ask about the doomed, they are people who were content with murky waters,
فَقَوْمٌ — so they are people. The fused front letter is the 'then' opening the answer to the earlier 'if'. The noun is the reply's subject in the plain subject ending; its indefinite shape, 'a people', presents them as a fresh, non-specific category being introduced as the answer.
From: Rain and God's Decree →ثُمَّ قَامَ الْقَوْمُ فَضَرَبُوهُ حَتَّى أَضْجَعُوهُ،
Then the people stood up and beat him until they knocked him down.
الْقَوْمُ — the people. The al- marks it definite — *the* particular crowd. Though one word, it names a collective body, and it is the real doer of the singular verb just before it, which is why that verb did not show plural endings.
From: A Stranger Finds the Prophet →فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لِعَامِرِ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ
Then a man from the people said to Amir ibn al-Akwa.
الْقَوْمِ — the people. The al- prefix makes this definite, the specific company on the journey. After the preposition it takes the genitive shape, naming the group the man is drawn from.
From: The Martyr's Reward →ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ قَوْمٌ بُهْتٌ،
Then he said, 'O Messenger of God, the Jews are a bewildered people.'
قَوْمٌ — a people. An indefinite noun 'a people' serving as the predicate of the emphasized statement: the Jews are such a people. Its indefinite shape keeps the description general, and it carries the adjective that follows it.
