How to say “suffice” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وإذا رآه في أثناء صلاةٍ لا تُغني عن القضاء كصلاةِ حاضرٍ، بطلت على الأصح
If one sees water during a prayer that does not exempt from making it up, like the prayer of a resident, the prayer is invalid according to the more correct opinion.
تُغْنِي — suffices. 'suffices / dispenses [with],' feminine to agree with 'prayer,' and negated. It takes 'from' (next) for what it would excuse. So: a prayer that does not make a later make-up unnecessary.
From: When Earth Replaces Water →فَالنِّيَّاتُ لَا تُغْنِي وَحْدَهَا إِذَا كَانَ الْعَمَلُ غَيْرُ صَحِيحٍ،
So intentions alone do not suffice if the deed is not correct.
تُغْنِي — suffice. A present-tense verb in its feminine-singular form, agreeing with the non-human plural subject 'intentions' (which Arabic counts as one feminine unit). The subject is carried by that agreement rather than repeated, and with the 'la' before it the sense is 'they do not suffice'.
