How to say “Umar” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وعلى عمر مخرج الرسول من دار الخيزران وقد طال ما خبي،
And upon Umar, who led the Prophet out from the house of Al-Khazeran, and indeed what was hidden lasted long.
عُمَرَ — Umar. This proper name is governed by the preposition 'upon' just before it. As a name of this type it takes a single -a ending in the post-preposition slot rather than the usual two-vowel ending, a quirk of certain proper nouns.
From: The Story of Prophet Joseph →وَقَد رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ فِي صَحِيحه عَن عمر بن الْخطاب
Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih from Umar ibn al-Khattab.
عُمَرَ — Umar. This is a personal name in the genitive case because the preposition just before it governs it, even though proper names carry case in Arabic. Note this name takes a single undoubled ending rather than the usual two, the pattern certain names follow.
From: Sincerity and Hypocrisy →ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ، فَلَبِثْتُ مَلِيًّا، ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا عُمَرُ أَتَدْرِي مَنْ السَّائِلُ؟
Then he departed, and I stayed for a long period. Then he said: 'O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?'
عُمَرُ — Umar. The name being called, in the special address form that follows the vocative particle, which is why it takes a plain ending with no tanwin. It identifies the listener the speaker turns to. The call form is Arabic's grammatical marker that this noun is being addressed, not used as subject or object.
