The decisive word is that which distinguishes between truth and falsehood, separating one from the other.
وَالْبَاطِلِ — and falsehood. wa- (and) on a definite noun in the genitive, the second item under 'between': 'truth and falsehood'. The conjunction ties it as the matching half of the pair, and it keeps the genitive carried over from 'between'.

And beware of the path of falsehood.
الْبَاطِلِ — the falsehood. This definite noun completes the 'of' pairing with 'path' before it: 'the path of falsehood'. As the owned half it takes the genitive ending, and its al- marks falsehood as the known, total opposite of the truth urged earlier. The bare juxtaposition of the two nouns carries the 'of'.
